When we think of the qualities that make us awesome, we think of our go-getter characteristics. The brave and strong and flashy things about us stand out. And they should! Those things are awesome.
But as I ponder our collective superpowers this month, I realize that sometimes it is the softer, gentler, less glamorous qualities that really set us apart and make us special. And those things deserve some celebration too.
Our world needs saving, there’s no doubt about that. Look around you on any given day and see the turmoil. Read the paper, watch the news. People are hurt. And people are hurting each other. But there is always hope for saving our crazy and complicated world. And a powerful aspect of saving anyone or anything is the unique ability to relate, to care, to understand, and to comfort.
Compassion enables our emotions to lead our behaviors. It encourages us to walk in other people’s shoes. It fills our hearts so that we can fill the hearts of others. It reminds us to be caring and kind and concerned. It softens our edges and creates an environment of understanding. And compassion is your superpower!
I am a self-proclaimed sap. Those of you that know me, know that you can’t talk about a touching topic or share your pain without tears welling up in my eyes. I feel it too. I care deeply. And I want to help.
“Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.”
~ Dalai Lama
Perhaps our purpose is simply to help each other through life. To give of ourselves. To be fully present in the presence of others. To be understanding. To feel each other’s pain. To be respectful of people’s feelings. To reach out. To cry together. To heal together. To walk hand in hand. To be compassionate.
