Have you ever just known the way a situation would turn out before it even began? Sort of a sixth sense? Or a constant nudging, telling you to move closer or to back away? Me too.
Ever since I was a little girl, I have had this knack for knowing. I can tell if people are kind and pure hearted almost instantly after meeting them. I can feel when circumstances should be steered in an alternate direction. I just know when something’s amiss before it goes bad.
I would like to think it is some kind of special magic. I always wanted to be Samantha from Bewitched. But it’s not magic. We all have it. You have it too. And it’s today’s superpower!
Intuition guides you into or out of situations in a seemingly mystical way. It fills your being with either calm or chaos, and it pushes you toward or pulls you away like a magnetic force. It is an innate ability to just know.
How cool is that, right? If we all just know everything, we will all live happy and stress-free lives because we will be prepared for adversity and will be able to avoid it. Yeah, well, it doesn’t seem to work quite that way. We miss the signals and we make mistakes.
The challenge is not in having intuition, but in hearing it, it turns out. You see, it can be hard to decipher sometimes. The world around us – opinions and advice and never-ending chatter – can be noisy. And sometimes it is hard to tell what voice is speaking. Is it the voices of others or is it the voice of reason and truth and intuition?
Surfacing your intuition needs one very crucial element. Stillness.
Shhhhhh. If you just sit and be quiet and listen, it will come to you.
Holy crap, I sound like a wackadoodle! Seriously, I just re-read what I typed and I should probably pack my bag for the looney bin. I might as well have said, “Shhhhhh. Be vewy vewy quiet. I’m hunting wabbits.”
As silly as it sounds, I believe it to be true. Our intuition fills us with the power of just knowing, but only when we can lower the volume of the raging rush around us.
Distance yourself from time to time. Allow yourself a stream of uninterrupted thoughts. Tune into the voice that really matters. That inner voice of reason that can be heard only when you intentionally listen. Meditate. Take long showers. Walk on the beach. Drive in silence.
Do whatever works for you. But every now and then, shut out the world around you so you can shut up the noise and allow your intuition to emerge.
How do you recognize the voice of your intuition?
What ways can you intentionally allow your intuition to emerge?
